Sonar is the lightweight model of Perplexity's Sonar API, launched on 21 January 2025 together with Sonar Pro and offered only through the API. Perplexity aimed it at companies that need quick question-and-answer features and included citations; Sonar Chat Completions support ended on 27 September 2026 and requests are being moved to its Agent API.
