o1-preview is an OpenAI reasoning model released on 12 September 2024 as an early version of o1 and the first model of the o-series, offered in ChatGPT and to API usage tier 5 developers. OpenAI trained it with large-scale reinforcement learning to work through a chain of thought before answering, and shows users a summary instead of the raw chain of thought. [1] [2] Primary source
